Make sure to bring appropriate gym footwear. In general, you cannot wear your normal outdoor shoes to a Japanese gym. Before entering the locker room, remove your shoes and carry them to the locker area. You must bring a pair of sneakers with clean soles that are specifically designed for wearing inside.
If you choose to stretch on the designated mats or participate in a yoga class with mats, remove your shoes before stepping onto them. When nature calls, remember to change into the restroom slippers provided in the restroom. When returning to the workout area, make sure not to wear the toilet slippers.
Food, including energy bars, is not allowed on the gym floor. Most Japanese gyms have a separate area for snacking. They will also have vending machines for drinks.
Please do not take pictures of yourself (or others); smartphone use is frequently prohibited in gyms in Japan, with the exception of special designated areas such as the lobby.
Always remember to bring your swimming cap when swimming in the gym pool. Swimming without one is considered unsanitary.
As with Onsens (Hot Springs) and other spas, exposed tattoos are not permitted in most of Japanese gyms. While you may not agree with this rule, it is well accepted in Japan. If you have a tattoo, be sure to cover it up before you enter.
This sticker below can cover tattoos and can be used in water.
