Animal cafes are popular in Japan, and Tokyo offers a myriad of options ranging from well-known cat cafes to the places with more exotic animals. People visit such cafes for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to, being unable to keep a pet due to apartment rules, a lack of time to care for a living being, etc. In this article, we will look at some of the most popular animal cafes in Tokyo.

MOCHA Harajuku/takeshita street

Cat Mocha is a popular cat cafe that has many locations throughout Tokyo and other cities including Saitama-shi, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe. MOCHA Harajuku/takeshita street cafe can be especially recommended due to its colorful interior and proximity to Harajuku station. If your schedule allows, it can be advised to visit the cafe during one of the dining times for cats which is 10:30 am and 7:30 pm. Cat Cafe Mofu Nyan

This is a rather unique cat cafe that specializes in short-legged breeds. It is located a 2-min walk from the nearby Shakujii-koen Station. If you visit their website (in Japanese), you can find out more about the cafe's cats.

Temari no Ouchi

If you have wondered what a magical cat forest would look like, Temari no Ouchi should be definitely on your list of places to explore. Visiting the cafe during the dining time for cats (between 6 and 7 pm) is a fun experience. Temari no Ouchi can also be reserved for a party. Kichijoji Station is only a 5-minute, making the cafe easily accessible.

Unlike the previously mentioned cafes, Asakusa Nekoen offers an opportunity to interact with abandoned cats. The cafe is a fantastic place to meet various cats and possibly adopt one of them. 

Micro Tea Cup Cafe

Micro Tea Cup Cafe is a perfect place to spend time with a company of Teacup Poodles and Mameshiba dogs. It is located just a 3-minute walk from Akihabara station. 

Dog Heart from Aquamarine

This cafe not only allows you to interact with dogs indoors, but it is also possible rent one to walk. The cafe also offers an opportunity to meet otters and meerkats.

Hedgehog Cafe Hurry Harajuku Terrace

Hedgehog Cafe Hurry is a popular cafe with a number of stores located in Harajuku, and one store in Yokohama. At their Harajuku Terrace location, you can meet cute hedgehogs, as well as chinchillas, rabbits, and even otters! While the cafe does not serve meals, you can bring your own food and even a drink, except for alcohol.

Owl Cafe Tokyo Akiba Fukurou

This cafe features 40 owls and is just a 3-minute walk from Akihabara station. You would need to make a reservation to visit the cafe.

Musashino Cafe and Bar Owl Village

What makes this place stand out is the fact that its not only an owl cafe, but also a bar where you can enjoy having a drink. While its Harajuku location in Central Tokyo is probably the easiest to access, it also has one more store in Kichijoji.

This is a unique cafe where you can spend time in a company of micro pigs. The cafe also has locations in Meguro, AEON Lake Town, and Osaka.

Tokyo Snake Center

Tokyo Snake Center is located just a 5-minute walk from Harajuku station, and it is the first cafe dedicated to snakes in Japan. The snakes there are not poisonous making it both an exciting and safe place to visit.
