Shimane Prefecture is in the Chugoku region in Honshu island and faces the Sea of Japan. It borders Tottori Prefecture to the east, Yamaguchi Prefecture to the west, and Hiroshima Prefecture to the south. The prefectural capital is Matsue-shi.
The climate is relatively mild from spring to autumn, with longer hours of sunlight than Tokyo from April to October, and snowfall is about 50cm-1m in the mountainous areas and about 10cm in the coastal areas. Shimane is blessed with nature, therefore agriculture, fisheries, and cattle farming are flourishing.
As tourist attractions, Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Izumo Taisha Shrine, and other historical sites are popular. In the northern sea of Shimane Peninsula, there are several islands called the Oki Islands.
